On Saturday 2/6, the organizers for Anime Boston announced that the 2021 convention is sadly canceled. The official announcement can be found on their official website and their Twitter page.
Anime Boston was originally scheduled for April 2 – April 4, 2021. Next year’s convention is scheduled for May 27 – May 29, 2022. Hopefully, the vile COVID scourge will be eradicated by then so we can cosplay and geek out in peace once again.
This is the second year that Anime Boston has been canceled because of COVID. Last year’s convention was canceled too then we put our hopes and dreams into Anime Boston 2021 and now this. Thanks, COVID!

In March 2020, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker banned gatherings of more than 250 people. Although the state of Massachusetts distributed 681,472 vaccines for COVID-19 as of February 4, the ban has not been lifted and there seems to be no end date in sight.

“Our executive board has reviewed the possibilities of postponing the 2021 convention for later in the year or hosting an online version of Anime Boston,” said the staff. “After careful consideration, we have decided it would not be feasible to do either at this time.“

The staff also said that because Anime Boston is a volunteer-run organization, and the staff works in their personal time, it would be difficult to reorganize the convention for a later date.

If you bought tickets for Anime Boston 2020 and they rolled over to this year, there’s good news! You can still use the same registration for Anime Boston 2022, you can also request a refund through Anime Boston’s official website.
As for lodgings and accommodations, you will have to contact the hotel yourself to cancel your reservations. If you booked reservations with a third party site, then you should cancel your reservations from there. The Anime Boston staff said that “Anime Boston is unable to intervene in these circumstances.”

Were you looking forward to Anime Boston ’21? Are you disappointed that it’s canceled? Are you as disillusioned with convention cancelations as I am? Let me know in the comments!
