New Ultraman to be Produced by Studio Khara

I’m going to assume that you all are familiar with Ultraman in some way shape or form. My basis for that assumption is that I know about Ultraman. Also, it’s Ultraman. You watch anime. There is no way you are unfamiliar with it. Speaking of things you have heard of, I know you have heard of Evangelion if you have read any of my work before. Yeah you see where this is going. Studio Khara is making Ultraman.

Honestly this is something I am very excited about. I mean it’s one of my favorite studios (well excluding that one little hiccup we had there) and they’re making a film for one of Japan’s most franchises. Yes, even more prolific than Gundam. Which is always surprising.

In any case, there is a teaser trailer out for the movie, and I have to say that it looks goofy in the best sort of way. Everyone in the movie seems to be taking their rolls super seriously but then you see the monsters and Ultraman himself and I can’t help but chuckle a little bit. Which is good. I don’t think I’d want an overly serious Ultraman.

I know I just said that but I immediately think of Shin Godzilla, which was a very serious (and very good) Godzilla movie done by the same people doing the new Ultraman. We have both of the directors of Shin Godzilla working on Ultraman, although my main favorite Hideaki Anno will not be directing. Instead he is taking on planning and scripts. The director for this new Ultraman movie is Shinji Higuchi.

So a bit of information on Mr. Higuchi. He has been with Anno for a while now from what I can see. I only phrase it like that because he has had a major role in pretty much all of Anno’s most notable works. He has worked on Evangelion (show and remakes), Gunbuster, Diebuster, and I don’t really know what else needs to be mentioned. That’s enough for me to be honest.

What I’m trying to say is he has a lot of experience. I believe he doesn’t have many stints as a solo director, so we will see how this goes.

It appears that his first time directing was actually the live action Attack on Titan movies. Both of them. Maybe we should approach this with some caution after all…

I think I’m just about out of things to talk about…oh wait! Actors! It feels weird to not say voice actors for once. Anyways, I recognize none of these people. Let’s go over them anyways. As the lead we have Takumi Saitou. He’s the guy who gets to transform into Ultraman. He was in the live action Space Battleship Yamato, another live action movie I am just now hearing about. That’s it for big movies, next actor.

In the role of “partner of the main character” we have Masami Nagasawa. They have actually been in some stuff I am familiar with, like your name, the Gintama live action movie, and the Bleach live action movie. I think they were also in Doraemon

    Ultrayeet.

Finally we have Hidetoshi Nishijima, with no listed roll. He was the voice of Detective Pikachu in the Japanese VO of the live action Detective Pikachu movie. He was also in The Wind Rises. Fun fact about The Wind Rises, Hideaki Anno was actually the Japanese VA for the lead roll. Weird how that works.

That should about wrap things up. In terms of release date, we know nothing. Estimated release is summer this year. Oh sh*t! That reminds me! Wasn’t the new Evangelion movie supposed to come out around now? Hmm. I wonder why I haven’t heard anything..
