Rejoice Studio Ghibli fans! The beloved film, Kiki’s Delivery Service, will be adapted into a musical! This musical will premiere in March and will run until April.
Based on the novel series by Eiko Kadono, Kiki’s Delivery Service has seen a variety of live-stage adaptations. One of the musical adaptations premiered back in June 2017 and starred Kamishiraishi Moka as Kiki and Abe Aran as Tombo. The story was later re-adapted in 2018, with Fukumoto Riko starring as Kiki.
Kiki’s Delivery Service is a coming-of-age story following Kiki and her black cat Jiji. Shortly after the novel series began publishing, Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli directed the famous film we all know and love.
The latter novels inspired other directors from different areas of the entertainment industry. For example, theatre director Ninagawa Yukio directed a stage musical adaptation from 1993-1996.
The Kiki’s Delivery Service musical will from March 25-28 in Tokyo, April 10-11 in Nagoya, and April 15-18 in Osaka.
There haven’t been any signs as to how overseas audiences can view the musical. But, let’s hope that an announcement will be made soon!
