So what do we have in the news today? Well, there was a premiere for a show called Black Arrow, which is an upcoming anime that I really want to compare to Gundam but that’s pretty much only because it has mechas in it.
However this show comes from the creators of one of my personal favorite mecha shows, Mr. Kazuki Nakashima. The show isn’t entirely his, but he is writing it. He’s also doing the series composition. And when I say he’s writing it, I mean that the man is writing the scripts for every episode himself. And because I like going on about things I like, let me tell you about the other shows he’s worked on. Shows like Kill la Kill, Promare (that was a movie I think), and Batman Ninja (that one is definitely a movie).
Oh but wait, there’s more. The director is one Goro Taniguchi who worked on Code Geass and Gundam. I swear, Gundam is like the Beetlejuice of anime. Except you don’t even get the three times rule. You just mention it once and boom, now Gundam is your life.
I’m not done with big names who are working on this show. Toshiyuki Kanno is in charge of character design and is chief animation director. The man has worked on Trigun, Hajime no Ippo, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball… He has worked on a lot. He’s also worked on some stuff I’m not a huge fan of. Like the CG Berserk movies. And Dragon Ball GT. Last thing I promise, he also worked on Ninja Scroll. I know I’ve seen Ninja Scroll, but it’s been so long I can’t remember how I felt about it. Okay, next crew member.
Music is being done by Kohei Tanaka. He’s done Gunbuster, Gundam, and JoJo. I’m just going to keep it simple and leave it at that.
Studio VOLN is doing the whole animation thing. If you are unfamiliar with them, you are not alone, they have not done too much so far. What they have done is something called Idol Incidents. It’s a show where idols have to save the Japanese government from collapsing using “song and dance”. Let’s just move on.
Yeah, if you can’t tell, this show sounds like it’s going to be pretty damn good. Some of the character’s designs makes me uncomfortable, specifically the cowboy lady, but outside of that I really enjoy the art so far. The trailer is nice and crisp and actually makes me pretty interested in the show.
As for the story, well we don’t know too much seeing as how it’s yet to even be released, and is also a new IP, but we do have a summary. You know Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave? It’s that but mechs. Here is an exact quote.
“Ringarindo is a land surrounded by a wall. The wall covers, protects, cultivates, and nutures this land. The wall is god … it is the foundation of this land of Ringarindo.”
“One day, a mysterious man named Back Arrow appears in Essha village on the outskirts of Ringarindo. Arrow lost his memories, but says that all he knows is, ‘I came from beyond the wall.’ To restore his memories, Arrow heads out beyond the wall, but is embroiled in a battle with himself as the stakes.”
So yeah, it’s just the Allegory of the Cave but anime. Saying that out loud, I think I am absolutely sold on this show. And that “nutures” typo in the quote? That’s not mine, that’s from the source. The show premieres on January 8th at 24:00 on Tokyo MX, Gunma TV, Tochigi TV, and BS11. What time zone is that? No idea, it doesn’t say. By the way, expect the show to run for two seasons.
It will also be premiering on- hold on this cant be right. Well, uh, evidently it’s going to be premiering on ABC. Oh, wait I was confused. Asahi Broadcasting Corporation. Not to be confused with American Broadcasting Company. You know, the cable tv channel that has such great hits like The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, American Housewife, and the American remake of Good Doctor. Wow, what an accomplished selection of prime time television.
This is why we watch anime.
