The Pokémon Company International announced on Friday, that Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle will be premiering in the West. Additionally, the company released an English trailer for the movie on Youtube on Friday as well.
Although it is unclear when American Pokemon fans will see Secrets of the Jungle, Japanese fans will be able to see the movie on January 25, 2021. The movie was originally supposed to be released on July 10th, 2020, but TOHO studios decided to delay the release because of the pandemic, but now everything is set to go.
This movie is about a boy named Koko, who was raised by Pokémon in the Okoya Forest. Koko essentially grew up deep in the jungle and lived his life believing that he is a Pokémon. Until he meets Ash and Pikachu, of course. Now, we have an adventure where Koko possibly gets to discover his humanity, make new friends, as well as save his home. It’s like George of the Jungle, but with Pokemon.
The movie’s cast includes Shoko Nakagawa who plays Karen, a female researcher, Kankurō Nakamura who plays Zarude, Moka Kamishiraishi who plays Koko, and Kōichi Yamadera who plays Professor Zed, a Biotope Company researcher of cutting-edge technology. Additionally, Tetsuo Yajima is co writing the script with Atsuhiro Tomioka, the Pokemon series writer.
Hirotaka Marufuji, who was the chief animation director and sub-character designer for Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us is designing the characters for Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. Marufuji is also the chief animation director for Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle and will be working alongside Yasushi Nishitani, who also worked on The Power of Us. Hiroyuki Kato is the animation producer and Masafumi Mima is the sound director.
So, aside from giving us a heartfelt story, along with a great cast and crew, what does this new movie mean for Pokémon fans you might ask?
Well for starters, with Secrets of the Jungle, we’re going to get to see a new type of bond between humans and Pokémon that possibly rival Ash and Pikachu’s. The movie is going to give us a look at the new legendary Pokémon, Zarude. Zarude is the Mythical Pokemon that raised Koko as a baby. A human being raised by Pokémon is highly unusual, so I’m extremely curious to see how this movie decides to show that relationship. I’m especially curious to see how Koko’s relationship with Pokemon will affect the way Ash sees Pokemon, and what this means for future trainers.
According to this press release from the Pokemon Company International, Zarude not only going to appear on the silver screen, but it is also going to appear in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Pokemon Company International also announced that it will distribute codes for Zarude the people who play Pokemon Sword and Shield and who get Pokémon Trainer Club emails on December 11, 2020. The deadline to sign up for the Pokémon Trainer Club is November 20, 2020. For those of you who are curious, Zarude is a level 60 dark/grass-type Pokemon.
I’m looking forward to learning more about Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. This movie will be the first Pokemon movie that has been released in two years. More importantly, Secrets of the Jungle will be the 23rd movie in the Pokémon franchise. This itself is monumental because this means that the Pokemon franchise has stood the test of time. With 23 movies, 23 seasons, and god knows how many games, the Pokemon franchise keeps coming up with new content to captivate both old and new fans alike. Myself included.
