Sk8 the Infinity is the Skater Anime We’ve Been Dying For

Sports anime is an incredibly diverse genre. If you’ve never indulged yourself, I recommend you change that fast. Of course it is home to shows about the obvious mainstream sports such as baseball and basketball with titles like Ace of Diamond and Kuroko no Basuke, but you might be surprised to find out just how many sports have their own dedicated anime. Heck, one of the highest regarded sports anime is called Ping Pong: The Animation.

Seriously, think of a sport and see if it exists in anime form. There’s a large chance it does. Even rock climbing and cycling have representation. But despite all this, there’s been a glaring omission for years now…skateboarding.

But ladies and gentleman, today is a very good day. Today is the day where that all changes. Behold: Sk8 the Infinity!

As a southern California streetwear brand, skating is very near and dear to our hearts. Outside of fashion and anime itself, skateboarding is likely the next most influential scene to streetwear as a whole. Because of how pervasive the skating and anime aesthetics are to fashion nowadays, the pairing of the two seems like a match made in heaven. Multiple times a year I found myself exclaiming, “why the hell isn’t there a skateboarding anime?!?”

So, it is with great sincerity when I say that we are ecstatic about this! To top it all off, the show is being created by an all star team of talent. To name a few names, the show is directed by Hiroko Utsumi (Banana Fish) with series composition by Ichiro Ohkouchi (Code Geass), and the animation studio behind it all is the highly regarded studio Bones.

If you haven’t watched the trailer yet, the show looks like it will feature a mix of realistic skateboarding scenarios as well as an eclectic collection of extremely unique characters and skating challenges. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. What’s anime without that dramatic quirky flair?

At this point all we can do is eagerly wait for January and hope that the show ends up being as amazing as it looks, but with a team and a concept like this, I might just venture a guess and say that I think we’re all in luck!
