The beloved romantic comedy, Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen otherwise known as Kaguya-sama: Love is War, will be making a return for a third season and an ONA according to its official Twitter account. An official announcement was also made during the Kaguya-sama Wants to Tell you on Stage event in Japan.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War is notorious for its spin on the typical high school romance story. Shinomiya Kaguya, the titular character, and Shirogane Miyuki are respectively the vice president and president of the student council. They both are seen as smart and respectable role models by the students and teachers of their school. However, we learn that there is more to the story. Deep down, Kaguya and Shirogane have romantic feelings for each other but their egos and wish to maintain their poised persona prevent them from confessing to one another. Instead, they try to trick each other into admitting their feelings so that they can feel like they “won.”
What viewers find so amusing about Kaguya and Shirogane’s dynamic is their well-thought-out plans and ability to account for unfamiliar situations. Their internal monologues, which reflect on their true personalities, when something doesn’t go as planned are hilarious. Another aspect some viewers find enjoyable is Kaguya and Shirogane’s slow romantic progression. Some viewers enjoy the struggle the two have, since it makes their reactions to unpredictable situations all the more funny. However, other viewers do not enjoy this slowness since the two characters’ struggles may be seen as frustrating.
However, the show does not solely focus on Kaguya and Shirogane’s lack of romantic progression. Rather, there are moments where other characters are given the limelight for the scene and where the comedy relies on non-romantic interactions. For instance, Shirogane absolutely destroying the rude French woman by repeating the two French words he knows is regarded as iconic, earning thousands of views on YouTube.
One thing that may have surprised most fans is the rise of Fujiwara Chika’s dance in season one’s ending. Her dance was so addicting that she became her own dance trend on TikTok. Many people, even those who haven’t seen a single anime, posted videos of themselves doing what was termed the “Chika dance.”
Hopefully A-1 Pictures will develop Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 3. If so, we can anticipate great production from the studio that brought us Blue Exorcist, Black Butler, and Blend S. Additionally, Akasaka Aka, the original creator for the Kaguya-sama: Love is War manga, was listed as part of the staff for season three. So, we can hope that season three won’t stray away from the mangaka’s original plan.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2 finished airing in June 2020 and was rated higher than the first season by fans. The success of the second season only adds to the growing anticipation for the third. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been an official announcement for when season 3 will be released. The ONA will be released sometime in 2021.
